Apartment Baby and Design Style: Attempts At Making A Come Back0
Before my husband and I became parents, we invested more time and more of our spending money on furniture and home decor items. We were classic DINKS (Double Income No Kids for those curious) and took full advantage of being in that part of our life. From about 2006-2008 we went through a period where we replaced almost every piece of our current furniture in our apartment.
Gone were the items from our individual single days and out the door went the couch that I bought fresh out of college. We sold items on Craigslist and basically overturned what we both started out with. We would take lovely afternoon walks and wander through gorgeous design shops perusing furniture for our downtown condo. My husband would wander on his own and come back side tables and nice things like photo frames.
Then the obvious happened; we brought a child into our apartment dwelling and life as we knew it halted and the pointy glass coffee table had to be pushed aside. Our gorgeous Kartell Bourgie table lamp had to be moved out of the reach of an infant who was learning to walk and had the need to touch everything. We had to side line our love for modern home decor for more practical every day solutions, even if that meant never ever replacing our pointy glass coffee table and just existing on not having one at all. The nice cushions on our couch were used as props for breastfeeding and we stopped putting the same amount of effort into creating our apartment style.
Now that our little apartment baby is a full fledged well behaved child, we’ve realized that we can get back to putting a little bit more passion and design into our home. It was after our recent wedding anniversary that we decided to invest in a new coffee table, sans pointy edges, and new dining chairs. The big change is that we now naturally include talking about durability and whether felt pen will come off the material. We love a good deal but don’t want to cheap out and buy something that will only be temporary, so this decision takes some time and thought. Which makes me feel pumped and excited and a little bit like my old self again!
We have our wish list and have been eyeing the armless Kartell Maui chairs for our eating area. We are in the final decision making process about what colour to go with and are debating between a buttery yellow or a cool robins egg blue. We keep tossing around ideas for a new coffee table, but with our new child friendly guidelines in place we haven’t settled on anything just yet. I’m feeling pretty excited about getting back to some of things that we used to really enjoy in the past and I can’t wait to have fresh new pieces in our home.
