Rainy Days: Practical Life Lessons

January 9, 2014 // Parenting, Vancouver

Today while standing in line at the coffee shop with Josie, a very eclectic artsy lady overheard us talking about how we had just been at Josie’s first painting class. The lady was in her 50’s with perfect skin, wearing a multicoloured flowing skirt and gloves. It was the gloves that got Josie’s attention and the almost 2 year old started doing jazz hands at the lady. This got the coffee shop stranger very excited and she went on to tell us how she is a painter and has to keep her hands warm so she can paint.

After some cute engagement between Josie and her, she started to tell me about how cosmic children 6 and under can be. In her very melodic rhythmic voice she told me her thoughts about childhood, how it is the only time that we are ever 100% true to ourselves. Not clouded by our parents expectations and experiences or our peers. While I’m not usually into the cosmic way of life, I did appreciate her insight into little children.

Our random coffee shop conversation reminded me of the rainy day we had the other day. It rained so much that it was nearly impossible to dodge any rain drops and so it was easier to embrace it and get outside and just play. On went Ben’s old muddy buddy and Josie’s purple boots and we all went outside in the pouring rain. The only other people on the seawall were either serious runners or dog walkers, poor Lucy the dog did not care for the experience and was rather mopey until we headed back inside.

When I look at these photos of Josie playing in the puddles along the seawall, I can’t help but think that the coffee shop lady was on to something. The expression on her face is one of sheer happiness and total freedom. While watching her play I felt like she was actually experiencing life and not just living through it, something you seem to start doing as you get older. During our outing she picked up all of the floating puddle leaves and pulled them out to rest on the cement edges.

‘Mama! Look! I’m swimming! Oh, wait…there’s a leaf. I got it!

Josie turns 2 in a couple of days and this girl is loving life. Every day is exciting for her and she constantly does silly things to make you laugh. She doesn’t care what you think of her and she is really good at making you smile. When she wakes up in the morning she asks to be with Ben right away and always asks to say hello to Lucy.

Side note: I’m proud of the fact that not a drop of water made it on to Josie, minus her head, because of the muddy buddy. I love this product and it’s a total must for all West Coast kids.

I love all your city adventures and it’s easy to see why you love your condo/downtown lifestyle. Pictures if Josie in the rain are priceless.

  2. Olivia says:

Oh, I love this series of pics. They really are tiny little hippie free spirits. Just yesterday my 3 year old was rescuing leaves from the storm drains on our way home from school.

  3. Krista says:

Such sweet photos! And how great that she loves the rain, because she’s living in the right city!
So hard to believe she’s almost two 🙂

  4. Heather says:

Thank you for the reminder to get out and enjoy the rain! Something I have not been doing very much of lately.
