Summer Dinner Idea: Grilled Salmon Cake Salad

One of my favourite things to put together for dinner is a big salad that’s full of flavour and protein. A long standing dinner salad in our home is made with BC wild salmon and served over greens. Even as a self professed non cook, I can make this grilled salmon cake salad and it tastes just as amazing as when my husband (the chef) makes it.

I’m going to be totally real here, I do not love cooking.  Especially on those hot summer evenings when the stove feels like your biggest enemy. Overall,  I find making dinner to be a total chore that just needs to get done. This is totally opposite from my husband who is an amazing at home chef who can take random pantry ingredients and toss them  together to make some creation. His passion for cooking is what caught my eye from the very beginning.

We’ve been making this grilled salmon cake salad for the last ten years and we are currently taking advantage of the summer salmon season. I love the taste of fresh wild salmon and so when I see it at the market I always know that this salad will be on our menu.

Preparing The Salmon Cakes

The prep for this dinner salad can be done ahead of time by chilling the salmon cakes before grilling. This also helps them to hold their shape to make that true cake shape. This salad is so flavourful and filling with a definite tartness from the tartar sauce and that bit of crispiness from the cakes. These things together make it the perfect culinary combo.

You can most definitely use your favourite store bought tartar sauce but if you want go for full flavour try this recipe and you will not be disappointed. Homemade condiments can feel a bit fiddly to me and my husband is the one who really introduced me into this idea.

Making Your Tartar Sauce

When making your own condiments from scratch you can guarantee that you won’t find a better tartar sauce than one you can make yourself. Even if it feels like a bit of a process, the freshness will blow your mind.

The Final Product

This salmon cake salad is my favourite summer salad which is why I’m sharing it with you. After we made this salad we ate it on the patio together once the kids were all in bed. It was a little at home date night full of flavour. I could eat these salmon cakes every day and they really taste amazing the next day.

    YUMMY in my tummy! Now this is what I’m talking about. Fresh and light with lots of flavour. I’ve never tried a Japaense Mayo so I am super curious what kind of flavour it adds.
