The Summer Of George!

May 27, 2014 // Parenting, Pure Mama, Vancouver

Somehow I have the whole month of July OFF of work and I couldn’t be more excited. I took some vacation time and swapped a few shifts and ended up with 33 days off of work. I know some parents bemoan having their kids off of school for the summer, in Vancouver our kids get 2 months off from school, but I’m so excited to have Ben home with us this summer!

I may be dating myself a lot, but do you remember that great Seinfeld episode where George declares it ‘the summer of George!’? He started out with so much exuberance and then fizzled into, well, typical George. We are starting out with a lot of similar George themed exuberance, however, I fully expect to continue through the month ticking off things on our list and loving every day. It’s the summer of us!

Memories from last Summer

One thing I really missed while Ben has been in full day kindergarten was all of the fun  outings and things that we used to do together. Before school ruled the week we always did fun errands around the city and went to cool attractions that were just blocks away from us. We had spent a lot of time in our neighbourhood and that really helped us get to know our neighbours and feel more connected to our community. The clerks at the grocery shop started to ask where Ben disappeared to once he was in the swing of school, they had grown accustomed to seeing him every other day when we’d pop in for a quick dinner shop.

The other day I decided to be a ‘fun mum’ and kept Ben home from school. I’ve been working so many weekends this past month that I felt like we needed to spend a bit of family time together. So, we headed off to the Vancouver Aquarium to learn about jellyfish and watched the sea lions eat some fish. We briefly came home and then we were out again, stopping for cool drinks at Starbucks and some crazy playtime at the park next door. My kids came home sweaty and dirty and I felt a lot of happiness and I had missed that feeling.

Ben had so much fun and he asked when his summer vacation was going to start. He was also ELATED to hear that I would be off work for a whole month of his Summer holidays. So, in my usual fashion, we sat down and made up a list of all the things we want to do this summer. This is what we came up with so far.

  • Go to Second Beach and hang out the pool….a lot
  • Get ice cream just because
  • Visit auntie Glynis in the burbs and go to the water park and indoor pool
  • Make popsicles
  • Go camping for like 4 days…no 5 days!
  • Make s’mores
  • Go to grandma’s house and use the slip n’ slide in her backyard
  • Eat BBQ hamburgers
  • Go to the beach
  • Have play dates with all of our out of town friends that we don’t get to see too often (that’s you Heidi and girls!)
  • Go see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with uncle Kyle
  • Play at the playground every single day

I adore the list that Ben came up with and can’t wait to spend all of July doing all these fun things together! I’m totally in for exploring the beaches nearby and also being able to head out of the city to visit friends and family without a school or work schedule on our heels.

Check out a few of our favourite popsicle recipes

Swirly Strawberry Creamsicles

Root Beer Float Popsicles

Watermelon Mojito Popsicles (for mamas alike during those endless afternoons)

Here are some attractions we will most definitely be visiting this Summer

Krause Berry Farm

Harrison Hot Springs

Granville Island Water Park

What’s on your summer fun list?
